Heating by the Sun drives convection.

This moves water around for our convenience.
The motion is highly affected by the Earth's rotation.

In the northern hemisphere,

• air moving north is bent to the east,
• air moving south is bent to the west.
  

  As a result, air circulates counterclockwise around a low pressure region.
  

  Compare the theory to this picture of hurricane Emily.
  

  It is just the opposite around a high pressure region.
