Hillside Building
Maybeck set down some guidelines when it came to building on hillsides. A major point of his was that the natural forms of the land should be left undisturbed as far as possible.

Cutting and filling should be kept to a minimum. Nature has already shaped the land in an efficient manner and will undoubtably reshape any changes humans make.

Natural waterways, along with accompanying trees/plantlife should be preserved. The trees and plants will help to keep the land around these waterways stable.

Things of natural beauty such as crowning hills should be left as permenent open spaces. These are the aspects which attract people to certain areas. Building over such places would very likely ruin that which originally attracted us.
