Lightscapes
These are polarized light micrographs of proboscis muscles and stylets of a common intertidal Pacific coast hoplonemertean Amphiporus formidabilis. Because muscles are highly structured (not unlike crystals) they rotate polarized light producing a variety of shades and color effects, sometimes creating an impression of volume. These images (by S. A. Maslakova) were presented as part of “Blow up: Artistic Microscopy” exhibition by Svetlana Maslakova and George von Dassow in the Coos Art Museum (Coos Bay, OR) in February - April, 2009.
