Using Avaya Telephone Features
Special Tones

Our AT&T switch is an AUDIBLE SYSTEM. The use of special rings and tones help us to understand the timing to activate many features. Each Tone is alphabetical order.

Busy Signal

  • Extension is busy.
  • The busy signal is a sound that may not be heard often after conversion is completed.

Confirmation Tone

The Confirmation Tone "confirms" the system is ready for you to proceed. The sound will be three short bursts of tone which indicates action accepted, you may proceed.

Coverage Tone

  • Your call is being re-directed to a coverage path, one short tone.
  • Only heard by internal callers or five digit callers to another OSSHE campus.

Dial Tone

  • Dial Tone is the sound we hear when the telephone is ready for use. Dial Tone may be slower in coming to your line at certain times, so it is very important to ensure you have clear Dial Tone before placing a call or to activate certain features.
  • Dial Tone will only stay on your line for about ten seconds. You will hear the "Siren" Tone when the Dial Tone ends.

Distinctive Ringing

  • Ringing Intervals
    • 1 long ring = inside (campus) call.
    • 2 shorter rings = outside (off campus) call.
    • 3 shorter rings = priority call, automatic callback or consult.
    • Does not work under certain conditions:
  • Key telephone equipment.
  • OPX's (Off Premises Extensions).
  • Data restricted Class of Service.
  • Special Audible Ring:
    • Calling party hears a special "ring-bleep" when calling a single line telephone using Priority Calling and the called extension is "busy".
    • Only used with Priority Calling and Consult.

Music on Hold

  • Heard by caller who is on hold.
  • Heard when call is in "queue":
    • Trunk Queueing.
      • Is heard for sixty seconds.
      • If no trunks are available after the sixty-second period, your call will be dropped from queue.
    • Automated Call Distribution.

Recall Dial Tone

Three short tones followed by dial tone. You may now proceed.

Reorder Tone

A "fast busy" tone (indicates temporary block, you can try again later).

Siren Tone

  • The Siren Tone is like the sound of a European Ambulance (alternating high and low tweedle).
  • If you dial a code or feature and hear the Siren Tone, it may mean the feature is not available, or that the feature is under some type of controlled restriction.
  • The Siren Tone could mean that an extension is not working, i.e., has been disconnected or is under some type of controlled restriction.
  • If after ten seconds of dial tone you have not dialed something, you will receive the Siren Tone.

Warning Tone

  • Your call is going over high cost facilities (Long Distance at full cost).

On Single line phones: FLASH, RECALL, TAP, & R all indicate the same button. Any single line set without this button will have to use the Switchhook button instead.
