LEGAL Definitions

Affirmative Action:
A concerted effort by an employer, educational institution, or organization to rectify past prejudicial practices against specific classes of individuals, such as blacks or women, by affording them temporary preferential treatment until such time as true equal opportunity is achieved.


Discrimination:
In
constitutional law, the grant by statute of particular privileges to a class arbitrarily designated...where no reasonable distinction exists between the favored and disfavored classes.

Prejudicial treatment or denial of regular privileges
on the basis of sex, race, age, nationality, or religion.

Federal laws, as augmented by court rulings, proscribe discrimination in employment, housing, voting rights, extension of credit, public education, and access to public facilities.
