This is the first amp that I designed from scratch. I like the goofy look of the 832 tube, and while I was inspired by some other successful builds, the final circuit was all of my own design. I was interested in a ultra-linear push-pull amp, but since the 832 only has one screen shared between the two units in each tube, this lead me to the idea of a quad 832 design. The driver stage is a classic concertina phase splitter using an 6SN7 driven by a direct-coupled 6SL7. Even though some of the 9-pin tubes probably have better performance than what I used, I liked the old-school charm that the octal tubes provide. I realize in retrospect that my choice of driver was probably influenced a lot by Sy's Red Light District design.
