Dear Carl:

I am writing to you in your role as Acting President of the UO Chapter of the AAUP pursuant to a conversation I had with you yesterday. The Senate Ad Hoc Committee on COI/COCC has agreed to hold a "Town Hall Meeting" on Conflict of Interest/Conflict of Commitment of Wednesday 21 January from 1500-1700. Furthermore, it has been agreed that this will be a joint Senate/AAUP meeting. I am to act as "moderator" of the meeting.

The COI/COCC committee will meet next week to iron out the final details of the meeting. But it is anticipated that there will be an initial panel discussion featuring presentations by 3 people and a subsequent interaction with the audience (which I will moderate). Many members of the COI/COCC committee will be present and will sit at the table at the front of the room although they will not make initial presentations. I invite you as Acting President of the UO Chapter of the AAUP (or your designee) to be one of the people making the initial presentations and would ask you to limit your time to 10 minutes. Although obviously I am not prescribing your thoughts on the matter, you might want to consider discussing materials already related to AAUP documents, copies of which are available on the committee web page http://www.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen089/COICOCC-AAUP-7Jan09.pdf http://www.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen089/COICOCC-AAUP-Conf.pdf I also respectfully ask you to consider sending me additional documents to post on the committee web page that you think reasonable and proper.

This email and ALL committee documents are to be posted on the committee web page http://www.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen089/COICOCC.html I respectfully ask you to send me an email indicating whether or not you will accept my invitation.

Respectfully submitted

Peter B Gilkey
Chair Senate Ad Hoc COI/COCC committee
