Wesley W. Erickson - About

I'm a PhD candidate in physics at the University of Oregon. I currently am in Dan Steck's atomic physics lab where we currently trap single atoms with the intent of probing aspects of quantum measument theory. I studied physics in undergraduate at Reed College, where I wrote a experimental thesis on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency. If you're curious about my research or anything else, feel free to email me.

Curriculum Vitae

My CV will appear here soon.

I'm originally from Seattle. In addition to physics, I enjoy electronics and programming, and have a special place in my heart for wasting hours learning random tricks in linux. For outdoor activities I enjoy running, sprint kayaking, and biking. If you refresh the page, you'll see some other insights into my interests!

Science Outreach

I have helped out with a number of outreach events that encourage children to engage in the sciences.

  • SPICE - Every year SPICE puts on a science summer camp for middle school girls. For two years I've helped out with the engineering camp, where we teach 8th graders to program Arduino microcontrollers, interface them with various electronics, and finally build a full size electronic pinball machine.
  • OSA Sponsored Outreach - The Optical Soceity of America sponsors education and outreach programs. Several times a year we visit schools and libraries and display some really fun demos in optics, material science… and sometimes just really cool things (liquid nitrogen for the freezing and the icecream is always a big hit).

Feel free to email me if you have a organization near UO interested in science outreach.

Illesim? What?

I'll keep the Bob Dolling to a minimum–Illeism is the practice of referring to oneself in the third person. This is almost fitting for a page of self reference, but it's still too weird. Even Wes think's it's weird.
