Procedure to follow for volunteering in Community organizations

WHAT TO DO: 
1. Go to the INFORMATIONAL MEETING which is held at the beginning and near the end of the quarter. (See Enrolling for specific dates and times)
2. Register for the class at the meeting.
3. From the list below, choose one of the jobs that you are interested in . 
4. Call the contact number listed below. Present yourself as a PLE student and set up a time to meet with the organizational leader.
5. Meet with the volunteer organizational leader in charge.  Fill out the U of O PLE agreement form and you and that person will sign it. Make sure to record your hours of work and have your employer sign the time sheet.

1. High School Equivalency Program (HEP) University of Oregon, 1685 East 17th Avenue, Eugene, Oregon 97403

Job Description:
Tutor in Spanish to Spanish speakers from all age groups who are studying for the General Educational Development (GED) Certificate.  Tutoring is provided in the five areas of the GED: 1) Writing 2) Reading 3) Social Studies 4) Social Science 5) Mathematics.  Tutors work one-on-one and in groups and must have the ability to work effectively in a multicultural setting.

2. U.S. Office of the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (E-LAW U.S.)-a global network of public interest lawyers and scientists who collaborate across borders to defend the environment.

Job Description:  1) Online translation of electronic conference discussions.  Volunteers are assigned a day to translate the messages, but can do it either in the ELAW office or at home at their convenience if they own a computer.

2) Document translation, mostly legal or scientific documents, again at their convenience.

3. EC CARES Program

Job Description: Working with Spanish speaking children (ages 3-5) with developmental delays and sometimes with parents.

4. Siempre Amigos(Office #120, 944 West 5th Avenue, Eugene OR 97402) An organization dedicated to survivors of torture, trauma, political and social violence from Latin America.  We are part (Eugene’s branch) of Oregon Health and Science University’s Intercultural Psychiatric Program from Portland, Oregon. We are a comprehensive program providing psychiatric, psychological, legal and social services to survivors and their families.

Job Description: Tasks are assigned as needs come up (please note needs vary).

#1 English Tutoring for Adults:  Some clients would like to have conversation partners and tutors for US Citizenship exam to exchange practicing English/Spanish.   

#2 Math/other subjects Tutoring for Kids: some clients’ kids need help with homework, or just some company to do something fun.

#3 Food Donations Gathering: Food boxes need to be picked up and delivered to Siempre Amigos office (short distance). A car would be helpful.

#4 Interpretation/Translation: Some clients need somebody to sometimes give them a ride and interpret English-Spanish for them to medical/varied appointments. Every now and then some clients need written materials to be translated.

#6 Social Events Support:  Help is needed to coordinate or make phone calls to clients or just support setting up and cleaning up for social events for the clients.

#5 Donations Coordination:  Help is needed to look for and find shops, bakeries, restaurants, stores, professional service providers, etc. that would like to make donations of services or goods to our clients.

Spanish Spoken: some to a lot.

Time: Hours vary a lot (usually a maximum of 1-2 hours per week).

Requirements: English/Spanish skills, patience, self-motivation, respect, among others. Fill out volunteer forms, drug test required. A car would be helpful.

5. Birth to Three (86 Centennial Loop, Eugene) a 
nonprofit organization that provides parenting education and support for families in Lane County and offers programs for Spanish-speaking families.
  
Job Description: Volunteers are needed to play with children ages newborn to five years old while parents are in class. Students will have opportunity to converse with native speakers from Mexico, Central and South America. All levels of Spanish proficiency are welcome. Staff is bilingual. Must enjoy children and able  to demonstrate professional behaviors including confidentiality.

Bi-Monthly Facility Tours:
 Give tours of the YMCA facility to Spanish speaking members of the community who are interested in becoming a member of the YMCA. Answer facility, registration and program questions. This will be one evening and one weekend for about 2 hours each.
Program flyers and Registration Form Translation: 
Translate current flyers and forms into Spanish and keep already translated forms current. This is an ongoing process so hours and amount translated can be flexible.
Phone Inquiry Follow Up: 
Return phone calls from Spanish speaking community members answering questions about the YMCA facility, program, registration process. This is a flexible position. Time can be schedule daily or weekly.
Reception Center Staff: 
Work at the Reception Center to be available to help community members who speak Spanish. These hours are flexible, but need to be scheduled in advance so we are able to post the hours we will have a Spanish speaking staff at the desk.
Translator: for BBBS documents:
Translating BBBS documents into Spanish, such as brochure and orientation materials. Time is flexible and can be done at the Y or away.
Interpreter for enrollment interview:
Serve as an interpreter during enrollment interview for the Big Brother Big Sister program. Time varies according to need and interview schedule.

Job Description:
Position: Latina Program Troop Assistant
The student intern will be assisting with the formation of new bilingual Girl Scout Troops in the Springfield area. This entails organizing projects and objectives for weekly troop meetings and informing parents about Girl Scout opportunities, what is going on with their child in the troop, providing updates about troop affairs and involving parents as much as possible to empower them to lead the troop.

There may be some work promoting the Girl Scout troops to recruit new girls, but this will not be the focus of the position. Student should feel comfortable speaking and interacting with both parents and children and feel comfortable working independently. Training is provided and all program materials and milage is covered by GSWRC.

Preferably bilingual bicultural Spanish student at the 300+ level. If student is not bicultural a study abroad in a Latin American country is also favorable. All material will be revised before being sent so writing does not need to be perfect but should be intelligible enough to edit.

Job description: FOOD for Lane County is the regional food bank for Lane County, which, through the hard work of literally thousands of volunteer hours each month, works to improve the ability of low-income individuals to maintain an adequate supply of wholesome, nutritious food. WHAT TO DO:

2. Register for the class at the meeting.
3. Go directly to  200 North Monroe St. Eugene where you will give Julia Girod <girod_j@4j.lane.eduthe Criminal Background check packet of information. She will process your criminal background form. This takes about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. 
(Please indicate whether you want to be in Elementary, Middle School or High School)
4. Contact Debi Starr at starr@4j.lane.edu  She will assign you to a school.
5. After hearing back from Debi, get together with the teacher and school she assigned you to and set out a plan of when you will work for the teacher and what you will do. Fill out the U of O PLE agreement form and have the teacher and you sign it. Make sure to record your hours of work and have your employer sign the time sheet.
