payroll: Summer Youth Employment Program
May 26, 2009
TO: Payroll Administrators
FROM: Christine Lonigan, Employment Manager
SUBJECT: Summer Youth Employment Program
Do you have work in your department that can provide experience for a young person? Looking Glass, a local youth agency, has received a grant supported by federal stimulus funds to employ local youth in the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
Participants, aged 14 – 24, will be paid by Looking Glass to work in local agencies. Looking Glass will handle all workers' compensation and other employment record keeping. They would like to find work sites at UO that would provide entry or semi-skilled work in clerical, landscaping, maintenance, child care, or related areas. The youth would work 32 hours per week (Monday through Thursday) for seven weeks. They will be prepared to start June 22, 2009. The campus supervisor would be expected to give basic training and oversight to the young person; a Looking Glass site supervisor will visit the work site once a week and is available for consultation. UO is not obligated to keep a youth working if there are performance problems.
Please talk to hiring managers in your department and consider this opportunity to teach job skills and provide experience for a young person. Having a positive experience earning a day's pay for a hard day of work is a great education for a young person. If you are interested in participating, please complete the Position Request Form found at http://hr.uoregon.edu/jobs/LookingGlass_appl_form.pdf and either submit electronically to Looking Glass, or print and mail the form to:
