travelnews: Air Traffic Controllers Strike in Italy

A strike, Thursday, by Italian air traffic controllers has led to the
cancellation of hundreds of flights around Europe.
Some 22,000 passengers were affected by the eight-hour stoppage over pay
and conditions.
Worst-affected by the stoppage was Alitalia, followed by the German
carrier Lufthansa which cancelled 54 flights between Germany and Italy.
Airports in Rome, Bologna, Naples, Turin, Milan and Verona were among the
hardest-hit by the walkout.
The strike was the first in a series of transport walkouts scheduled for
this month. Alitalia flights are due to be disrupted again on 19 January
when staff walk out over a rescue plan involving the loss of 2,700 jobs,
according to Reuters news agency.
Meanwhile, local transport in Italy is also expected to be in chaos on
Friday, January 09, as drivers of buses, trams and underground trains
resume pre-Christmas action, despite a new pay deal.
