The formula for calculating solar heat gains through windows is:
Q = (area)(SHGF)(Shading Coefficient)
The Shading Coefficient (or SC) is derived from the solar optical properties of glazing mentioned previously. It represents the difference in percentage of transmitted solar gain through the glazing in question, from the Reference Glazing (SC = 1.0 or 100%).
The architects specified two types of glazing to correspond with the differing functions of the view and daylight portions in a typical window bay. Both types are manufactured by Viracon and use a low-emittance coating. The Shading Coefficients are:
SC(view) = 0.44
SC(daylight) = 0.64
Before using the Solar Heat Gain formula, one further set of calculations were performed which took into account the effect of the shading devices. This calculation modified the SHGF.
