SURVEY on... Backyard birding in the Chesapeake region

Abstract

One instance of the online survey involving choice experiments concerning backyard birds. For the survey’s choice tasks, we used the 25 most-common backyard species in the respondent’s own birding conservation region (BCR). These different species are featured five at a time, across five choice tasks, where each task also describes the consequences for all other species of wild birds. All other species were grouped into (1) species of conservation concern and (2) species not of conservation concern. The goal in this study was to incorporate quantifiable abundance information for relevant backyard bird species in the respondent’s own locality, with choice tasks involving what would happen to the abundance of each species if no measures are taken, and what would happen to the abundance of each species if costly measures were taken to protect or enhance abundance. This information was intended to permit calculation of alternative measures of biodiversity, aside from just species richness.
