Methods
In order to examine simulated space and virtual communities, digital methods of representation and communication will be encouraged. Work may be done with traditional methods and hybrid experiments as long as the final results can be read over the World Wide Web.
Each student will be responsible for maintaining a work-in-progress home page on a University server which will be linked into the class home page. Having the work in this format will allow us to engage outside critics and students in discussion and will a digital portfolio of work at the end of the term. To help you communicate your design ideas clearly, you will be paired with a student from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver who can give you feed back.
For this studio, we'll try to build community within the UO group as well as establish a rapport with the Vancouver group using Internet tools. For this we'll use e-mail, listserv or Web forms and video-conferencing and the Web publishing. Unfamiliar techniques will be explained or reviewed during studio hours or in the computer lab.
Evaluation Criteria
The design studio is worth 6 credits on a Pass/No Pass basis. Qualitative feedback will be given throughout the term. Main areas for evaluation will be
