Post 8 - Conclusion
When we look at the forest, we only see the plants and animals that are right in front of us. We can't see all the interactions between organisms or the cycles of nutrients, water, life, and death that keep this unique group of species alive. An old-growth forest is a unique, diverse habitat that includes a layered canopy with gaps, lots of downed wood and snags, and many types of plants, animals, fungi, and insects. Although we may never understand all the intricacies of this forest, long-term research at the Andrews plays a vital role in expanding our knowledge of forest ecology and human impacts on the ecosystem. Further research will help us see the cycles and connections in this forest that are not apparent to the naked eye. We hope you will share your experience with friends and family and come back to hike again.
