Ventura was the second son named "Manual" born to parents Francisco "Frank" and Jane De Rego. Manuel was given the same name as an older sibling because, as an infant, he was very sickly and not expected to live long. He spent his early years in Makawao, Maui; where, as a young man, he worked on the Haleakala Ranch as a Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy), and where he met and married Elizabeth Souza. At some point in time, Manuel changed his surname to Ventura, apparently to avoid confusion with elder brother, Manual de Rego. Family members recall Ventura as being a family name of Manuel's mother, Jane DeRego; however, the exact origin of the Ventura surname has yet to be determined Manuel Ventura, also known by the nickname "Nene" to family and friends, maintained a city home on 2nd Ave. in the Kaimuki district of Honolulu, as well as a dairy farm and riding academy in the country on the windward side of Oahu, in Hauula. A family portrait from the 1940's shows Manuel standing next to a farm sign reading as follows: "Piholo Riding Academy - Ventura's Farm, Hauula" An accomplished horseman, Manual also raised Thorougbred race horses, which were raced on local tracks in Oahu. His accidental death in 1946 occurred while riding one of his horses. He is buried in Diamond Head Memorial Park in Honolulu. Manuel de Rego shown on Maui, Hawaii census in 1910.
