Riverfront Research Park

At its last meeting, the Eugene Natural History Society Board discussed ways of contributing to the University committee that is currently reviewing the status of the Riverfront Research park. We agreed that the Society will write a letter to that committee stating that we are against any further development on either side of the railroad tracks and would much prefer that the Research Park project be terminated. We also decided to encourage our members to write the committee as individuals and that will be announced at our next general meeting on May 15th, at which one of the Univ. Committee members, Paul Engelking, will briefly speak on this topic. The Committee will be receiving public testimony through May 28th and comments will be received via e-mail at rrpreview@lists.uoregon.edu or by mail to Riverfront Research park review Committee, c/o Theodore Palmer, Department of Mathematics, University of Oregon, Eugene OR 97403.

May 16 Field trip to the
H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest

Art McKee, director of the Andrews Experimental Forest and this month's speaker, will conduct a tour of the Andrews Forest on Saturday, May 16, the day following his talk to the Eugene Natural History Society. A bus has been chartered for the trip with space set aside for members of Eugene Natural History Society. Reservations are required; call Pam Druliner at (541) 822-3317 by Thursday, May 14. The bus will depart from the Federal Building parking lot at 7th and High Street at 8:00 am.

If using the bus is not feasible, field trip attendees may travel in their own vehicles. Directions to the Andrews Forest Headquarters: Drive east on Highway 126 which becomes the McKenzie Hwy; continue on the McKenzie Hwy past town of Blue River (about milepost 40); about _ mi east of milepost 43 turn left (north) onto US Forest Service Road 15 (sign will say Blue River Reservoir); cross bridge over Lookout Ck (first bridge on road 15, about 4.5 mi) and take next right (100 yds) onto USFS road 130 (sign will say Andrews Headquarters), proceed about _ mi bearing right at Y to Andrews HQ. The tour's formal presentations will begin at the headquarters at 9:30 am.

Bring a lunch and water to drink. Wear comfortable shoes--we will walk short distances on uneven terrain. Dress for any kind of weather--layering will be a good idea.
