Arboretum offers Classes



SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2-4 pm: Art from Recyclables Workshop. Led by Sarah Grimm of BRING Recycling, this family-oriented scrap art revival at the Arboretum combines creativity, fun, and environmental awareness. Tools and materials provided. Pre-registration required; call (541) 747-1504. Fee: $3 ($10 per family of 4 or more).

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 10 am-noon: Fall Fruits & Foliage Walk with botanist Judith Manning. Enjoy the fall colors and learn about seed dispersal and fruit identification. Meet at Mt. Pisgah Arboretum Visitor Center, Buford Park. Suggested donation: $3 for nonmembers.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1-3 pm: "Going Buggy" Walk with Djibo Jim Zanzot, former Peace Corps agriculture volunteer and Arboretum nature guide. Explore the world and life cycles of insects that inhabit the Arboretum - on land, in the pond, and in the air! Bring the family and meet at the Visitor Center within Buford Park. Suggested donation: $3 for nonmembers.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1-3 pm: FREE Scarecrow Workshop, led by Fran Rosenthal, MPA Education Manager. In preparation for the Scarecrow Contest at the Mushroom Festival (Oct. 29), the group will see a slide show of winning scarecrows, brainstorm new ideas, and create their own designs. Bring clothing and decorations for scarecrows, we'll bring the rest. Meet at Amazon (Community) Arts Center, 2700 Hilyard St., Eugene. Call 747-3817 for more information.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1-4 pm: Butterfly Gardening Workshop, taught by Linda McMahan of Berry Botanical Garden of Portland. Examine the vital connection between butterflies and their host plants (especially Monarchs and Milkweeds). Slide show/discussion on appropriate plantings + guided Arboretum walk included. Pre-registration required; call (541) 747-1504. Fee: $15 ($12 Arboretum members).

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2-4 pm: Elder Walk (a new program just for seniors). Led by nature guide Vernon Barkhurst, focusing on fall ecology at the Arboretum; refreshments afterward. This month's walk is the first of a quarterly series co-sponsored by Oasis and LTD. Suggested donation: $4. Please call 747-1504 to pre-register.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1-3 pm: Dried Flower Centerpiece Workshop with Ken Gillespie, Florist, at his shop on 5th Street in Eugene. A benefit for the Arboretum's Education Program. Learn how to fill a basket (bring your own if you prefer) with a seasonal arrangement of Oregon's best dried plants. These make great gifts, too! Materials provided - bring your own clippers. Pre-registration required; call (541) 747-1504. Fee: $30.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1-4 pm: Build-a-Birdfeeder Workshop, taught by Don Lown, retired teacher plus WISTEC & UO Natural History Museum volunteer. A family activity workshop - bring the kids and your hammer; all materials plus plans provided. Pre-registration required; call (541) 747-1504. Fee: $10-$20 depending on birdfeeder design chosen.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29, 10 am-4 pm: Mt. Pisgah Arboretum Annual Mushroom Show & Plant Sale. Huge educational mushroom display, plants, food, music, expert mushroom identification, guided walks, scarecrow contest, children's activities. Suggested donation: $3 per person, $6 per family for nonmembers. Call (541) 747-3817 for more information.
