pH- a ìshorthandî form of expressing [H+]
pH =-log [H+] or log 1/[H+] where [H+] is in molar
Also holds for OH- and ions like Ca2+
As the concentration of H+ goes up there is an inverse relationship and the number
gets smaller
pH of 7 (1 x 10-7 molar) means a lower concentration than pH of 3 ( 1 x 10-3)
The effect of adding H+ or OH- to solutions depends on the ìactivityî of the ion and not
its concentration. Thus, if something can ìbind upî the ion no effect on pH is observed- sensed by an ìion-sensitive electrodeî
ìThe solution is bufferedî
