Buffers- resistors of change
In solutions. it resists large changes of pH when acids or bases are dumped into the mix-the goal is constant pH
pH changes have very significant effects on chemical reactions which can disrupt normal cell function
Buffers are a mix of an acid and a base where a acid buffer contains a weak acid and its salt called a conjugate base
HCl + KOH _ H2O + KCl
The ability of a buffer to resist pH changes depends on a) its concentration
b) how much ion is available to bind the H+ or OH- when it is put in the solution
