The museum’s courtyard is missing a centerpiece: a place where the visitor can get a breath of fresh air and take a break from their journey through the world of art. The idea arises to create a sculpture. The curator asks you to create a sculpture that includes both additive form and carved space-making like his favorite Mary Miss' Field Rotation. The museum has many extra 2” x 8” x 8’ wood studs and the donated services of a concrete firm. The curator would like a sculpture that uses the wood studs to define inter-connecting spaces without fully enclosing them. The concrete base can be cast with voids and relief contouring that complements the wood structure above.
Purpose
To introduce sculpting space with additive modular form and subtractive carving
To introduce a 3D modeling program (Sketchup) as a design tool
Objectives
To become familiar with
Navigating 3D space, saving and retrieving views
Transforming simple objects in 3D space by moving, rotating, scaling and mirroring
Exploring design variations through layer visibility
Using component (symbols) and groups to organize a model
