Organizing graphic information provides a way to use it in different ways. By grouping and layering components, we can examine the information in different ways. By defining symbols and nested symbols as substitutable parts, we can quickly try alternatives that look radically different but are built on the same underlying relationships. Separating aesthetic content and organizational structure allows maximum flexibility in many aspects of digital design.

Purpose

  • To teach methods of model organization
  • To show how design variations can be generated using symbol substitution

Objectives

  • Create a room or building model using given symbols.
  • To develop competency in basic creation and geometric transformations
  • Use layers to sort elements by materials, groups to cluster elements by location.
  • Create alternate forms for symbols and substitute for given symbols to create variations
  • Create nested symbols
