The Moss Street Children’s Center is an innovative “green” building on the University of Oregon campus. We were interested in determining the effectiveness of the energy efficiency strategies used in the building. The building director expressed concern about the performance of the heat recovery ventilators. This study focused on one of the two heat recovery units (HRUs) in the building, aiming to determine if it was performing at the rated efficiency of 80%. Initial results showed that unit was performing at only 57% average efficiency. When we brought this to the attention of the maintenance staff, they found that the filters were in dire need of cleaning. A subsequent data sampling strongly suggests that the unit is now performing at or above rated efficiency.
