Course
Description:
This course is a continuation of CH337G.
In 337G, the focus of the course material was on techniques for organic synthesis
and characterization. Specifically, we focused on developing greener methods
for organic synthesis and purification. We also studied and applied basic
forms of spectroscopy including infrared and visible spectroscopies. During
this term we will build upon the base established last term and apply those
skills to more extended syntheses and applications of organic chemistry. In
both the lecture and lab components of the course, we will focus on new greener
methods of synthesis with an emphasis on utilizing new reaction types, alternative
reaction conditions and nontraditional forms of energy input (e.g. photochemistry
and microwaves). We will develop more extensive use of spectroscopic methods
for characterization of our products, including more rigorous treatment of
IR spectroscopy and introduction to NMR spectroscopy.
Text: A packet of materials will be available in the UO Bookstore.
Laboratory Notebook: A bound notebook with consecutively numbered pages must be used. All written work connected with the lab is to be recorded in permanent ink. You must record all of your data in this notebook. You will have to turn in copies of the notebook pages (either carbon copies or photocopies).
Attendance:
Lecture attendance is essential.
In addition to lectures explaining the reaction chemistry, experimental methods
and green chemistry that you will learn, important announcements/hints will
frequently be made during lectures. If you do have to miss a lecture, please
make arrangements to get the notes from one of your classmates. Your grade
is largely based upon your laboratory work. Attendance is required. If you
are more than 15 minutes late you will not have sufficient time to complete
the lab and will not be allowed to begin work. If you have a valid excuse
you may be able to make-up a lab (you must inform one of your instructors
in advance if you are going to miss a lab), but only if there are openings
in the other section or during the make-up lab section. No additional make-up
lab sections will be added.
Examinations
and Grading
The only written exam this
term will be the final (Tuesday, March 20 @ 15:15 in 331 Klamath). The written
final will be comprehensive (it will cover lecture material on green chemistry,
reaction chemistry, spectroscopy and laboratory techniques). Bring a calculator
and several pens to the examination. Only black, blue or green ink is acceptable.
Usage of any other color may result in deduction of points.
Missed exams will count as zeroes in your final grade; there will be no make-up exam and no exams will be given early. If you have an acceptable reason for missing the exam, your final grade will be based on your other point totals throughout the course.
Grading:
* Lab write-ups and copies of notebook pages are to be turned in within 8 days of the completion of the lab. They are due by 5 pm the day after your assigned laboratory period. Tuesday labs are due on Wednesday of the next week. Thursday labs are due Friday of the next week. Points will be deducted from late reports (5 pts. for 1-2 days late, 10 pts for 3-4 days late, and 20 pts for 5-7 days late). Reports more than 7 days late will not be graded and will receive no credit. See page 8 of this packet for more information on lab reports.
Safety:
See the safety
handout for details. You are responsible for following the rules and guidelines
explained in the safety handout.
Any student whose deliberate or negligent acts endanger his/her own safety or that of others may be expelled from the laboratory.
E-mail: You can contact the instructors and TA via e-mail.
Check Out:
The security of your locker is your responsibility. You will be charged
for broken or missing items; your desk must be fully stocked upon check-out.
Failure to check-out will result in a $25 fine in addition to any charges
for broken or missing items.
