I Want to Be a Restaurant Reviewer
Okay, this isn’t about Felix (except that he was there). But this was so amazing that I just have to write it down. We were out at a new restaurant tonight (just opened a few weeks ago). We ordered a bottle of wine, a Bonny Doon Chenin Blanc. The waitress said, “Could you spell that?” She was serious. Chris suggested that he just point to it on the menu, but no, she wanted him to spell it.
When the wine came, it was a reisling, not a chenin blanc. Chris pointed that out, and the waitress (a new one this time) said she’d go check it against our order. She came back and said, no, this was what we ordered. Chris said no, it wasn’t, and she said well, maybe the bartender had given her the wrong bottle. She came back and said that it was what we’d ordred; they’d just changed the bottle. (!) We managed to keep from bursting out laughing until she’d left.
This was no mom & pop joint, but an upscale national chain restaurant. Too bad they don’t train their waitstaff.
Okay, back to Felix. He was, as always, a delight to eat out with. He loved the potstickers, and the rice, and the noodles and tofu (as well as the yogurt and pasta and apples we’d brought from home). They gave him a cup with a straw, and he taught himself to blow bubbles AND didn’t spill the water.
