Kingston Heath Project / Historic Preservation

The digitization of the History of Landscape Architecture course sequence as taught by Kingston Heath, chair of the Historic Preservation Program, began in the fall of 2008. The project consists of two parts: the digitization of Dr. Heath's personal 35mm slide collection and the cataloging of the digital images for inclusion in the Art & Architecture Images online digital collection.

After Dr. Heath taught a particular unit of his class, he submitted the carusel(s) of slides to the VRC for digitization along with a copy of his class notes which described each slide. The slides were assigned a unique identifying accession number in a new sequence, HEATH_VRC_00000. The digitization of the 1874 slides was accomplished using the Batch Scanning method, and a combination of VRC staff and Historic Preservation students cleaned and corrected the images. All digitization was complete in the early summer of 2009, and Dr. Heath was given a copy of the screen-resolution JPEG images.

The cataloging of the digital images is ongoing. Using Dr. Heath's decriptive data, a printed copy of which is attached to the lecture Order Form, a spreadsheet is used to record information in basic fields. The Cataloger is responsible for comparing authorities in the Art & Architecture Images collection and in the Vcat database for consistency. Each spreadsheet will be reviewed by the Staff before uploading the images.
