Distant View of Shijo in the Early Morning

by Asano Takeji, 1931

IHL Cat. #718

About This Print

A view of the Kanda River in the Shijo area of Kyoto in the early morning with no one about.  Tea houses stretch along the river on the right and a tall modern building, possibly still in existence (as can be seen in the below photo), is shown on the right beyond one of the Kandagawa's bridges.  One of Asano's sosaku hanga works of the 1930s of views in and around Kyoto.  A 1934 dated edition is shown below for comparison, but this collection's print is earlier, dated Showa 6 (1931) in the right column.
