Japanese Color Woodblock Print

Moonlit Night at the Museum

by Asano Takeji, 1932

Mexico City, Mexico

IHL Cat. #717

About This Print

A view of the Kyoto Imperial Museum (renamed Kyoto National Museum) on a moonlit night.  A family and its dog are out for a late night walk in the snow.  The date in the right column of Showa 7 (1932) indicates a likely first edition.  Other impressions, as shown below, carry a later date or are not dated.

Later Undated Impression

undated edition
Note the following differences from the print in this collection:
color scheme has been changed, print title has been moved to center of bottom margin and lack of margin notations

The Untitled Views of Kyoto Series

One of at least eight prints created by Asano in the early 1930s using a similar format [similar margin notations, title formats, signatures (generally "Takeji ga tō" in image and "Takeji suri" in margin) and paper size] showing views in and around Kyoto. See this collection's print Distant View of Shijo in the Early Morning for images of other prints in this series.
