About This Print

One of many hybrid process prints, using zinc plate (letterpress)1 and woodblock, of butterflies in various configurations and colors created by Chizuko from the early 1970s into the early 2000s. This collection's print Butterfly Dance - Winter is one of four the artist created with the title "Butterfly Dance" - one for each of the seasons.

In discussing her butterfly prints the artist acknowledged the difficulty of escaping one’s own success, admitting that she continued to make butterfly prints long after she had grown tired of the subject simply because they sold so well.1

1 亜鉛凸版 (zinc-plate etching) - A letterpress printing plate in which a zinc plate is corroded with nitric acid to form a plate surface. The plate thickness is usually 1.0 to 1.3 mm for printing.
