About This Print

This scene from chapter 29, The Imperial Visit, is described in the accompanying explanation sheet (not part of this collection), as follows: "The picture shows Prince Genji presenting the Emperor [partially seen in upper left] with game hunted in falconry." However, the only scene in "The Imperial Visit" chapter (Miyuki) involving the presentation of game birds is when the emperor has "a brace of pheasants tied to a leafy branch" sent to Genji along with a royal letter, as described below.

Source: The Tale of Genji, Lady Murasaki, Dead Authors Society, 2018
The emperor had invited Genji to join the hunt, but Genji had replied that a defilement made it impossible for him to go out. By a guards officer the emperor sent a brace of pheasants tied to a leafy branch.
