by Hagiwara Hideo, 1965

Circus No. 7

IHL Cat. #1117

About This Print

One of 42 prints in the artist's series Greek Mythology.  Hagiwara pictures a sleeping Ariadne, the daughter of Minos, the King of Crete, suspended by a single vine.  She is in her classic sleep pose of one arm raised over her head with a look or exhaustion and despair, as she has been abandoned by her lover Theseus on the island of Naxos.

The entire series was issued as a complete portfolio bound in a black woven material, imprinted in silver. Hagiwara employed both traditional Japanese woodblock technique as well as intaglio on these prints.
