British Museum Wall Label (from the exhibition Japan from Prehistory to the Present)
Exhibition label :: G92 Japanese Gallery :: Playground (1), 1964 Hagiwara creates richly textured and joyfully colourful images. To do this he uses new techniques such as scratching the woodblock like an etching, and printing on the back of the paper. He has won an international reputation for his abstract prints since 1958. Choosing a theme, he then develops a series of studies: this is the first of the ‘playground’ series. (TTC, Jun 2007)
