About This Print

Source: "Magic, Artifact, and Art," Eugene M. Skibbe, appearing in A Japanese Legacy: Four Generations of Yoshida Family Artists, Laura W. Allen, Kendall H. Brown, Eugene M. Skibbe, et. al., The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 2002, p.117.

"There is no nature in this landscape.  Only parts of humans and of machines." - Hodaka Yoshida

This print was created in 1973 as part of a series of fabricated landscape prints during the artist's Mythology and Landscape phase (1966-74). In describing these landscape prints, Skibbe states, "Hodaka began his landscape prints in 1970, and they partly paralleled and partly replaced his mythology series.  As in the mythology prints, he drew inspiration from Pop art and continued to use collage techniques for his compositions. But in the landscapes, he portrayed the devastating effects of pollution on the environment.... For these prints, Hodaka again cut pictures out of magazines: men and women, clothed or unclothed, pieces of fabric, junked cars, wristwatches, portable radios, paper currency, whiskey bottles, and the like. He then cut each image into a collage, with the whole appearing a bit like a landscape....He then photographed the collage. A photoetched zinc plate inked with black supplied the details for the final image, while woodblocks provided the colors."

This print was included in the print portfolio accompanying the deluxe limited edition (limited to 300 copies) of Gaston Petit's 44 Modern Japanese Print Artists, published in 1973. Each print in the folio was placed in its own cover as is shown below for Yoshida Hodaka's print. The other four prints in the portfolio were created by the artists Fukita Fumiaki (1926-?), Akiro Kurosaki (b. 1937), Tamura Fumio (b. 1941) and Funasaka Yoshisuke (b. 1939). To view Funasaka's contribution, go to this collection's print Blue and White Space, IHL Cat. #1579.
