About This Print

This print is one of seven small format prints created by Hakutei for the short-lived 1915 magazine Shin Nigao whose purpose was to advertise the kabuki theater and renew interest in actor prints. This print appeared in issue 3 of the magazine published in August 1915.

This print features the actress Hisamatsu Kiyoko* in the role of Akagashi Mitsue in an adaptation for stage of the novel Konjiki Yasha 金色夜叉 (The Gold Demon) by Ozaki Kōyō (1868-1903).

I have seen the actress in this print identified as Shimoyama Kiyoko, but I believe this is incorrect. Shimoyama Kiyoko was a pioneering female journalist of the period, not an actress.  Hisamatsu Kiyoko (b. 1886, nee Iwamoto Misako) was a stage and screen actress of the time, active in the Shin kokugeki (New Theater) movement.

For more information on this short-lived magazine whose purpose was to advertise the Kabuki theater and renew interest in actor prints, see the article Shin Nigao Magazine.

* Her name is also seen written as Hisabatsu Kiyoko (which I believe is incorrect) and her given name is  seen written as Kyoko, Kyōko and Kiyōko.

Hisamatsu Kyoko in the 1925 movie Onshū no kanata ni (Beyond Love and Hate).
