About This Print
One of three prints (see IHL Cat. #1299) commissioned from the artist by Hotta Watchmakers (Hotta Corporation) to commemorate the 95th anniversary of their watch shop. The print was published in collaboration with the Kokugakai [National Picture Association]. This print, carved and printed by Kawakami, was printed on paper made by Ichibei Iwano VIII, a Living National Treasure (Preserver of Important Intangible Cultural Properties) of Japan.
Ryohei Hotta (1913-1989), ex-president of the corporation, was a collector of timepiece ephemera who donated his collection, the "Hotta Collection" to the National Diet Library in 1987. Included in the collection is a privately printed 1971 catalog of colored woodblock prints on watches and calendars titled Tokei to koyomi no nishikie mokuroku.1
