About This Print

Two copies of one of three prints commissioned from the artist by Hotta Watchmakers (Hotta Corporation) to commemorate the 95th anniversary of their watch shop.  The print was published in collaboration with the Kokugakai [National Picture Association].  This print, carved and printed by Kawakami, was printed on paper made by Ichibei Iwano VIII, a Living National Treasure (Preserver of Important Intangible Cultural Properties) of Japan.

Ryohei Hotta (1913-1989), ex-president of the corporation, was a collector of timepiece ephemera who donated his collection, the "Hotta Collection" to the National Diet Library  in 1987.  Included in the collection is a privately printed 1971 catalog of colored woodblock prints on watches and calendars titled Tokei to koyomi no nishikie mokuroku.1
