About This Print

Number 92 of the one hundred prints that make up the series Showa dai Tokyohyakuzue (One Hundred Pictures of Great Tokyo During Showa).  Koizumi startedthis series in 1928 and completed it twelve years later in 1940. Note the print's title is in the right margin of this impression and in the left margin on the print in the Tokyo National Museum's collection pictured below.

In 1940, Koizumi created woodblock print charts containing print titles, dates, and comments for this series.  His comment for this print follows:

“In Tokyo there are a number of temples designated as national treasures. This is one.”

Gokoku-ji (護国寺) is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Tokyo's Bunkyō. It was established by the mother of the Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.  In 1873, Emperor Meijideclared Gokoku-ji the Imperial mausoleum and several of his childrenare buried there, as well as Emperor Meiji himself. It remains theImperial mausoleum today.  Gokoku-ji is also famous as the central temple that oversees the practice of Japanese tea ceremony in all the country's temples.
