About This Print

This large-format undated print, likely issued in the 1970s or 1980s by the publishing house Yūyūdō, is after a design which originally appeared in Takehisa Yumeji's 1920 book of poetry titled Yume no Furusato 夢のふるさと (Dreaming of Home), published by the Tokyo publisher Shinchōsha. The book contained 10 woodblocks and color illustrations as shown below.

The title of this print Chinese Ship Shop 唐船屋 (which can also be read as Karafuneya), appearing in script to the right of the geisha, references the shop or restaurant where the geisha entertains.
