About This Print

Evening scene of the boardwalk at the ferry landing in the harbor at Hamaōtsu on Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture. This print is part of the set titled New Eight Views of Ōmi (shown below), an updated set of views of the classic Eight Views of Ōmi (the area around Lake Biwa in Omi Province). There are at least three editions of this print as shown below. What I believe to me the earliest edition, possibly published in 1937, appears on the left with the two subsequent editions to its right displaying increasingly less detail in the background. The earliest edition of this print appeared in the 16 print set  Eight Views of Omi and Lake Biwa Scenery 近江八景と琵琶湖風景. As with many of Tokuriki's designs made for Uchida Publishing, this print was included in several print sets (portfolios) under different titles.

"The Eight Views of Ōmi dates back as far as the Chinese Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1271–1368) dynasties when the subject was originally conceived as the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang. The Japanese derived series (The Eight Views of Omi) depicts the area surrounding Lake Biwa, emphasizing natural splendor, the changing seasons, weather conditions, and time of day."
