About This Print

An evening view of the gardens of the inner shrine from across the Isuzu river.  This print is one of two prints in this collection (see Ise Shrine IHL Cat. #831) depicting views of Ise Jingū.  These two prints bear cover sheets explaining the scenes depicted, as shown below.  The title shown on the cover sheet in the right-most column reads 版画 (woodblock print) 内宮御手洗場 (inner Ise shrine purifying water), while the print itself is simply titled 伊勢内宮神苑 (Ise inner shrine gardens), in the lower right of the image.

It is reported that this print along with 3 others depicting the Shrine and surrounding area were offered for sale at the Shrine, each with an explanatory cover sheet attached.  Another impression of this print shown below is, apparently, a different print state.  It's margins are untrimmed and it has no cover sheet.

Ise Shrine - Isuzu River and the Mitarashi

Since ancient times, pilgrims to the Jingu have purified their hands here, before worshiping Amaterasu Omikami. By washing their hands and rinsing their mouth with the water from the pristine Isuzu River they purify their minds and bodies. This place is one of the most impressive locations at Naiku.
