Private House in Kurashiki

Japanese Color Woodblock Print

Private House in Kurashiki

by Tokuriki Tomikichirō, c. 1960s

IHL Cat. #772

About This Print

Tokuriki has given us a view from across the Kurashiki canal of an old house in the Kurashiki Bikan historical quarter.  While this collection's print is unsigned and not editioned, another state of the print using brownish tints was both signed and sealed by the artist and editioned, as can be seen below.  It appears that the same blocks were used for both states of the print.

Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

Kurashiki is located west of Okayama Prefecture's southern plains. During the Edo Period some 350 years ago, the area along the Kurashiki-gawa River was under direct control of the shogunate government and trade by boat helped the town to prosper.

Clusters of of-fashioned white-walled storehouses and rows of townhouses with lattice windows line both sides of the Kurashiki River in this nationally designated  Important Traditional Structures Conservation Area.
