About This Print
An unusual subject for the artist. The print exists in several color variations, two of which are in this collection. Print IHL Cat. #1193 is the darkest of the color variations I've seen. It carries the "Toshihisa" seal (see Print Details below) of the artist, while other copies of this print that I've seen, including this collection's IHL Cat. #1716, do not."In this composition, a fire in the distance illuminates the sky and creates an effective backdrop to the three moored boats."
Print Variations
The type of boats pictured in the print are likely kitamaebune 北前船 (large cargo ships) that were in wide use into the 20th century plying the Japan Sea. The below photo is dated 1880 and is titled "Japanese Junk".
