The Play - Tadanobu

Source: A Guide to No, P.G. O'Neill, Hinoki Shoten, 1929, p. 176.

Escaping from the capital and the danger stemming from his brother's suspicion of him, Yoshitsune has come to Mt. Yoshino.  But as Yoshimori has discovered that the soldier-priests there are unfriendly and plan to kill Yoshitsune that same night, the party flees from the mountain while Tadanobu stays behind to cover their retreat.  When the attack comes at nightfall he first drives the enemy back with arrows from a tower and then, after pretending to commit suicide, jumps down into a valley behind the tower.  After searching the tower in vain for his body, the soldiers find and attack him again, but once more he makes good his escape and hurries after Yoshitsune.
