About This Print
The height of their popularity was in the mid-1800s and these inexpensive prints were purchased and then often cut-apart and pasted onto Japanese screens or into scrapbooks. Harimazi-e could include the work of multiple artists or just a single artist, as in the case of these harimaze-e. For other examples of harimazi-e in this collection see Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) and his works from the series Kyōsai Manga.
In the above print the right panel pictures the volcano Sakurajima at Ōsumi on Sakura Island, with sailing ships in the sea around the island. Hiroshige III's image is quite similar to that of Hiroshige I's print of Sakurajima at Ōsumi in his 1854 series Famous Views in the Sixty-Odd Provinces.
The bottom panel titled Saigō Nanshū no zō depicts one of the great heroes, and later betrayer, of the Meiji Reformation Saigō Takamori (1828-1877), brush in hand having just completed one of his many instructive verses. Saigō adopted the pen name Nanshū, meaning South, during his five years in exile on the island of Oshima.
