About This Print

Nobukazu pictures the troops celebrating after a victory at Asan¹, Korea with sake served from barrels labeled 日本一 nipponichi ("Japan's best" or "number one in Japan.")  The small red cartouche in the center panel reads 寄贈品 kizōhin ("gift"), possibly a gift from the emperor.  The small red cartouche in the lower right hand corner sits above captured Chinese weapons and reads 分捕物 ("loot" or "plunder").  The artist did a similar design (see below) for a different publisher in the same year, 1894.
