Binyamin Lifshitz was born July 10, 1861 in Mir. His parents were Tzodock (spelling is a guess) and Leah Friedman. He married Esther
Rosansky in Mir in 1883. They had five sons born in Mir: Moishe
April 10, 1884, Yehuda Leib about 1887, Schleime about 1892, Mottel
March 2, 1893, and Gidalya April 10, 1894. The couple also had three
children born in New York.
Binyamin came to New York first in 1896 on
the SS Persia, followed by Moishe, and then the rest of the family.
When he first arrived he worked as a peddler, but eventually he opened a dry
goods store on the Lower East Side. The family lived at 274 Madison
Street in the Lower East Side for at least 30 years. He died December
10, 1928 in the Bronx.
