Policy on Incompletes
The grade of "Incomplete"
Missed tests and assignments should be made up before the end of the term. In any case, if the student has missed many tests and homework assignments without a legitimate reason or without previous arrangements for making them up, the student should either drop the course or receive the grade based on existing work.
A student may take an incomplete only if s/he has missed the final exam, and only with the approval of the course supervisor. A GTF cannot assign the grade of incomplete on his/her own determination.
Once the course supervisor approves the incomplete, the teacher and student must jointly fill out a form (available in the Romance Languages Office) in which the missing assignments and the plans for their make-up are agreed upon.
The teacher who assigns the incomplete is responsible for administering the test at a date agreed upon by teacher and student.
Students have one year to make up an incomplete. In order to remove an incomplete, a form (available in the RL Office) must be filled out and sent to the Registrar's Office.
We strongly discourage incompletes in first- and second-year courses. If you have any questions about the details of this possibility, consult your language program coordinator or director.
The grade of "Y"
The grade of "Y" indicates "no basis for a grade" and is used when a student on your final grade roster has not been present in your class for the majority of the term. This situation arises normally when a student fails to drop or withdraw from your class early in the term.
A "Y" grade cannot be used for students who are doing poorly in the class and want to avoid a low letter grade.
