Your progress will be assessed two to three times weekly in the form of a short quiz. These 10-point exams will test the previous day’s assignment in addition to activities carried out during class. They may cover any of the following categories: vocabulary, verbs, grammar, culture. Evaluaciones will be administered at the start of class: No make-ups will be given; do not ask your instructor for special allowances. The lowest two (2) quiz grades will be dropped.
Active participation is crucial in learning to speak a foreign language. The participation grade (100) is based on both quantity and of quality of your participation, where quality is determined by active, on-task participation in group activities, by coming to class with homework prepared, by volunteering, by being prepared when called on, etc.
Mandatory. If you miss more than six (6) classes, you cannot receive a passing grade and must formally withdraw from the course. The last day to withdraw from a class is Friday, November 12. If you anticipate being away, discuss your absence with your instructor ahead of time so that you can keep up with your assignments. It is unreasonable to expect your instructor to give you private tutoring to recover material you missed due to an unexcused absence.
NOTE: Consistent late arrival or early departure may affect your participation grade, at your instructor's discretion. Arriving late is impolite and disruptive. Please make every effort to arrive on time. If you arrive late and miss the 10-point evaluación, your instructor may count you as absent that day.
Chapter tests as indicated on syllabus. No make-ups will be given.
Your oral proficiency will be assessed twice during the term. You will be asked to carry out a conversation with a classmate. Your participation in daily class activities is essential to prepare you for these exams.
During the term, you will complete a series of writing assignments in the Paso a paso activities book. As your final project, you must type these essays and place them in the Así soy yo booklet along with photos and other memorabilia. Your grade will be based on accuracy as well as creativity.
Your instructor will give you office hours, telephone number, and email on the first day of class. If unusual circumstances prevent you from meeting an obligation, first see your instructor. If you cannot resolve a problem with your instructor, contact one of the course supervisors.
