Ph.D Program in Management The Ph.D program in management offers students an opportunity to develop broad-based conceptualand methodological skills in the field of management. The program emphasizes the development of both teaching and research skills, and is intentionally kept small to foster collegial student-faculty relationships. The department has a long-standing tradition of mentoring students through collaborative research projects, teaching support, and personalized placement assistance. The program aims to place successful graduates in faculty positions in both large and small research-oriented institutions. To achieve its mission, all students are initially required to develop a broad-based understanding of management theory and research. A solid understanding of theory-building and research methods is also required. Based on this knowledge, students then specialize in an area of management that will constitute their primary teaching and research interests. The program currently emphasizes training students in two conceptual areas: strategic management and organizational studies. Within these two areas, however, considerable flexibility exists to meet a student's individual intellectual interests. For example, several recent graduates have incorporated topics like entrepreneurship, services management, and international business into their programs.
