Ph.D Coursework

Required coursework for the Ph.D program consists of a minimum of 17 courses: 12 in the core area of management, broadly-defined, and five in statistics and research methods. Management courses include departmental seminars and courses taken outside the Lundquist College of Business in the University of Oregon's extensive social science program. For example, many students taken coursework in Psychology or Economics. Each student's program of coursework is individually designed in consultation with a faculty advisor.

The department offers a series of doctoral seminars on an every-other year basis in the following areas.

  • Organizational Behavior
  • Management
  • Theory of the Firm
  • Competitive Environments

In addition, a proseminar meets every other week throughout the academic year to provide an opportunity for students and faculty members to present their research, discuss current research and teaching issues of interest, and hear visiting speakers from other campuses. Past visiting speakers include Jeffrey Pfeffer (Stanford University), Barry Staw (University of California, Berkeley), Edward Lawler (University of Southern California), Arie Lewin (Duke), Tom Lee (University of Washington), Michael Hitt (Texas A&M University), and Robert Sutton (Stanford University).
